Running with a Goal

Last year I wanted to set a personal record on a 5k. I was terrified to set a goal because that meant I could fail. In August of 2012 when I was living in Findlay, OH, I ran the Up, Up, and Away 5k in 21:12. It wasn’t chip-timed so my time was even faster. I only had my son at that time and he would join me in the stroller for a lot of my runs, which gave me more resistance while training. My longest runs were only 6-7 miles.









Fast-forward four years and my life looks a little different. I now had multiple half marathons completed, no more stroller runs and I cross-trained with barre. I also turned 30! I hadn’t felt like I had pushed to my absolute best during a 5k in a long time so I eased up on distance training and focused on getting faster. Kim and I ran six races together from the middle of January to the end of March with my distances ranging from a 5k to a quarter marathon. We had signed up for our 7th race of the year together, the Brew HaHa Metazoa 5k, but she wasn’t able to race it with me. I decided this would be the race I would try to PR.








I had an amazing race. I gave it my all and placed 10th overall and was the 3rd female. I was beyond proud of myself but I still didn’t PR. My time was 22:26.7. I honestly did the best I could and still failed. I learned its ok to set goals and not reach them. I learned that giving my best is all I can give. And I learned that a lot changes in four years!
